Literacy Fun

We've been captivated by the stories ‘Back to Earth with a Bump’ and ‘Aliens Love Underpants.’ In ‘Back to Earth with a Bump’, a little boy's bed transforms into a rocket, sending him on a mission to find the missing sun. His adventures through space, encountering stars, planets, and moons, kept us all enthralled. Meanwhile, ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ brought lots of giggles with its tale of cheeky aliens searching for underpants on Earth.

Our literacy activities included:
- Matching sentences to pictures to understand vocabulary.
- Ordering the story to discuss what happened first, next, and last, enhancing story comprehension.
- Thinking of speech/thoughts for the characters to work on forming longer sentences.
- Playing a comprehension board game where children answered questions about the story.
We also dived into non-fiction books about space, discussing how they provide information rather than tell stories. Activities included:
- Finding the contents page in non-fiction books.
- Writing our own contents page.
- Creating a fact sheet for our own non-fiction book.

Maths with a Space Twist

Our space-themed maths activities helped us learn numerals in a fun and engaging way:
- Flying aliens: Children navigated number planets by standing on the correct number called out. Wrong answers meant a spaceship crash and starting over!
- Alien dot to dot: Connecting numbers up to 20.

Expressive Art and Design

We made our own telescopes! After learning about how telescopes help us explore space, the children decorated their telescopes with space-themed stamps. Once dry, we attached the stamps to the telescope tubes. We encouraged the children to use their telescopes to look at the stars over the weekend and share pictures of their stargazing adventures.

Science Experiments

We conducted a fun science experiment with balloons to explore how air affects travel distance and speed. The children drew alien faces on the balloons and discovered that balloons with more air flew farther and faster. The Orcas had a blast sending their alien balloons flying around the room!

PE with Jordan

Outside the classroom, our focus was on mindful movement, inspired by The Euros, Wimbledon, and the Tour de France. However, this term's key topic in PE was basketball. We started with catching and throwing to build foundational skills before progressing to bouncing the ball. We also played a colour game using a parachute, where children collected balls matching the parachute's colour section. This activity was a hit!
