September at POD: Eco Warriors, Storytelling, and Brilliant Bodies!
September has been all about new beginnings, and at POD, we’ve dived right into a term packed with fun, learning, and exploration! With fresh faces joining us and a newly revamped garden space, the children have had an amazing time getting stuck into everything from eco-friendly fun to fascinating facts about the human body. Here’s a round-up of some of our best bits from September:

Zero Waste Adventures

We kicked off the term with Zero Waste Week, setting the stage for our eco warrior theme this year! The children have been learning all about recycling and the importance of protecting our planet. From sorting plastic, paper, and cardboard in our recycling fun to venturing out for some litter-picking adventures, the kids have truly embraced the role of global citizens.

Our junk modelling challenges were a big hit, where they turned margarine tubs, milk bottles, and egg cartons into bug hotels and bird feeders! While crafting, the children explored science concepts like balance and stability, answering “why” and “how” questions as they worked on their designs. We also introduced them to ways they can make small changes to help the environment - turning off lights, using reusable items, and even making eco-soap. They’ve been curious and creative, showing us just how eco-savvy they can be!

Roald Dahl Magic

Throughout the month, we delved into the imaginative world of Roald Dahl by reading four of his beloved classics: The Enormous Crocodile, Colours, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. These stories whisked the children away to far-off lands filled with unforgettable characters and adventures. We used these books to fuel creativity through storytelling sessions, dramatic play, and fun activities that helped them connect with these quirky tales in a hands-on way.

Teddy Bear & Community Helpers

We also had a cuddly and action-packed Teddy Bear Day! The children chose their favourite teddies, and the day was filled with learning about caring for their furry friends at the "teddy vet." From there, our brave teddies put out imaginary fires in the garden and learned all about road safety on our race track. We even played park rangers, tidying up litter with the help of our honorary teddy patrol! It was a brilliant way to blend fun with learning, focusing on how our community helpers - like firefighters and doctors - keep us safe.

Exploring Human Bodies

September’s theme also brought some incredible exploration into the world of human bodies for our Preschoolers. The children were fascinated by the different parts of the body and how they work. Through fun activities, they learned new vocabulary and practiced identifying body parts.

One of our favourite projects was drawing outlines around our friends and labelling each body part as we went. The classic song, “Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” made it all the more interactive! The kids also loved designing their very own Mr. Potato Heads, which led to great discussions about the five senses and what we use each for.

Throughout the week, we explored these senses even further. We described what we could hear, taste, smell, touch, and see through sensory play, sparking curiosity and conversations about how our bodies help us experience the world. It’s been a fantastic way for them to expand their understanding of both fiction and non-fiction learning.

A Fresh Start at POD

Our garden has had a fabulous refresh this term, and it’s already a huge hit with the children! With a new bird-watching spot, a yoga beach deck, a sports shed full of exciting equipment, and our very own POD café, there’s been no shortage of outdoor fun. The revamped mud kitchens, construction area, and grow patch have been popular too, with the children rolling up their sleeves to plant fruits and veggies. Spending time outdoors is crucial for little ones’ development, and we’re loving how these new spaces are inspiring creativity, teamwork, and a love of nature.

Cultural Capital & Extra Activities

Cultural Capital is part of our curriculum every month and in September we’ve welcome talented teachers from DiddiDance, Kids Lingo, Rhythm Time, and had a splashing time with Total Fitness Swim Academy. From learning French to stretching our bodies through yoga and dance, these sessions have been all about developing new skills, boosting confidence, and fostering a sense of curiosity about the world.
